  wieder geiseldrama in USA-schule

Killer 'a loving, thoughtful husband'
Tuesday Oct 3 14:00 AEST
By ninemsn staff and wires

The wife of a truck driver who burst into an Amish schoolhouse in rural Pennsylvania and shot dead at least three girls says her husband was "loving, supportive and thoughtful".

"The man that did this today was not the Charlie I've been married to for almost 10 years," Marie Roberts said in a statement.

"Our hearts are broken, our lives shattered and we grieve for the innocent lives that were lost today. Pray for the families who lost children today. Please pray for our family and children," she said.

Amish families today gathered in shock outside the school after the third fatal killing in a US school in the past week — this time in the midst of a community which eschews violence and many of the trappings of modern life.

Eight people were wounded — some after being shot in the head — after the attack in the small Pennsylvania town of Nickel Mines and police said two of them were in "dire" condition.

"It would be a miracle if there is no other loss of life," State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said.

"They have multiple wounds, head wounds," he said.

Miller named the gunman as 32-year-old truck driver Charles Roberts, a married father of three who was not Amish. Miller said that in a final conversation with his wife before killing himself, Roberts said he wanted "revenge" for something that happened 20 years ago.

"He was angry, angry at God," Miller said, adding that Roberts "was equipped for a lengthy siege."

Miller said the two girls and one young teacher's assistant died at the scene.

His officers found "horrendous" carnage when they forced their way into the Georgetown Amish school in Nickel Mines, 55km west of Philadelphia.

According to police there were 10 to 12 girls and 15 boys at the school, all aged between six and 13. Miller said that all of the girls had suffered some kind of wound.

Roberts charged into the school armed with a handgun and a shotgun. Local media quoted witnesses as saying Roberts strolled into the school, smoking a pipe, talking in a rambling way.

He ordered boys and a pregnant woman teacher outside and bound the girls at the feet.

"It appears that when he began shooting the victims, these victims were shot execution style in the head," Miller told reporters.

Some "were shot in the head, some were shot in the arms," Miller added.

"One of the children died in the arms of one of our troopers," Miller said. "It is a horrendous crime scene."

"He was mainly firing at the students lined up at the blackboard as best we can determine," said Miller, who added that police stormed the building when the shooting started, but the gunman was dead by the time they forced their way in.

A spokeswoman at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia said three girls — aged eight, 10 and 12 — were undergoing surgery for gunshot wounds.

The Hershey Medical Centre in Hershey, Pennsylvania said in a statement that it was treating three girls aged 13, eight and approximately six for gunshot wounds and listed all of them in critical condition.

Lancaster County coroner Gary Kirchner told AFP he believed one of the victims taken to hospital had died. A Lancaster General Hospital spokeswoman Kim Hatch earlier said a girl had died. But police did not confirm a fourth fatality.

Miller said the gunman's exact grudge was not known, but Roberts left suicide notes for his children and called his wife from the scene moments before he died.

"Apparently there was some sort of an issue in his past that he, for some reason, wanted to exact revenge against female victims," Miller said. Roberts had grown up in the area and was well known.

"He was an outgoing person but recently he was not talking too much," Miller said.

The Roberts family released a statement saying: "Our lives are shattered and we grieve for the innocent and lives that were lost today."

As the spate of deadly school shootings continued, across the United States, two Las Vegas schools were on lockdown after police received reports of a student carrying a gun.

Last week a 16-year-old schoolgirl was killed when a gunman took six hostages at a Colorado school before opening fire and turning the gun on himself as police stormed a classroom.

On Friday, the principal of a Wisconsin high school was killed after being shot by a student.

There are about 200,000 followers of the reclusive Amish sect in about 20 US states and the Canadian province of Ontario. They eschew technology, and preach isolation from the modern world.

Their distinctive tiny black, horse drawn buggies are a familiar site on the roads of Lancaster County, and the community was a model for the 1985 movie "Witness," starring Harrison Ford.

"We are advising schools to go back and revisit their school plans, to visit their crisis plans, to increase their vigilance, to really focus on access control to the campus, to talk with local law enforcement and address what their strategies would be in the event of a crisis," said Ronald Stephens, of the National School Safety Centre, a private group that advises and trains US schools.
